Elizabeth Peyton

Elizabeth Peyton is an American painter who is a contemporary artist best known for portraits of famous people. Next to this and below are some examples of her work.

Her work is very expressive and this is shown through her interesting mark making but you can clearly see who the portraits are meant to represent. I think this mark making is very interesting and somewhat abstracted.

After researching this body of work I have discovered that this work is heavily influenced by Romance. She has gained inspiration from historic figures, film, novels, music and poems. Her body of work is always personal to her and contains a collection of her personality and emotions at her point in time.

"The Age of Innocence, 2007, again combines the historic and the contemporary in its representation of Countess Olenska and Newland Archer, the illicit lovers in Edith Wharton’s novel, who bear a striking resemblance to the stars of Martin Scorsese’s 1993 film version – Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis." - (For quote click here)

Daniel Day-Lewis.

Her collection of work shows a running theme of love. Each piece shows iconic moment for example the image below. This is an iconic scene in the movie "twilight".

This collection is oil on board and some are pencil drawing. Although I cannot find much on this body of work, I think her style is interesting as you can see every brush mark she has made or pencil mark.

Her work work links well with my theme because she work shows a collection of containers containing love.
